Mermaids- Truth or Myth?

Mermaids- Truth or Myth?

We all know that a mermaid is a legendary sea creature having the head and upper body of a woman and the tail of a fish.  She can be found in seas and lakes, or lying on a rock and combing her hair with one hand, as stories go. It is believed that mermaids sometimes forecast the future and are often accompanied by seals. According to myth, they lure sailors by singing their divine music.   But are they real?  Most people would say that mermaids are not real but some believe that they are.

The belief in mermaids is not limited to a few countries, as there are tales from all over the world (in India, for instance, there are the Apsara, beautiful water nymphs). However, most of those tales were told by sailors who "saw" them on long sea journeys. The idea of mermaids and mermen (the male equivalent) could be based on creatures from Greek and Babylonian mythology: Sirens and Tritons of the Greeks, and the fish gods, who were half human and half fish, from the Babylonians.

Images of mermaids are everywhere in art.  The images of mermaids are of beautiful women, very fit, with flowing hair and swimming with grace about the seas.

In this video below you can experience a mermaid swimming with wild humpback whales in Tonga just a couple of years ago?  Professional mermaid or real?  We can dream can't we?

However some have evidence (real or not) of a much different image of mermaids such as this YouTube video- Mermaids- Real or Not?:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSgVfRH4U_s- brace yourself for this one as it is not for the weak of heart.  I decided not to post this one and just leave it to the strong of heart to view.

Have you ever dreamed of being a mermaid?  Want to take a little mermaid meditation?  Just take 3 minutes and watch this little foreign film below and let your imagination go- just add water.

Well, if you think there is no such thing as mermaids perhaps this is the closest you can get to a real mermaid.

There is no doubt that humans have been interested in mermaids for a very long time.  There are countless articles, books, stories, images and collections of mermaid art.  I have always had a fascination with them and I have many objects in and around my home of mermaids, I don't know why but I am in awe of this feminine symbol of the sea.

In his book- The Censored Story of the Sea-People by William Bond he goes into great depth on mermaids and sea-people.  He published a blog in January of 2008- titled- Mermaids are Real. In this he writes:  "There is a real mystery about the mythology of mermaids. No self-respecting zoologist would ever contemplate the possibility of a creature with the upper body of a woman and the tail of a fish. Yet mermaids have been reported all over the world for the last few thousand years. There are mermaid myths and sightings from America, Asia, Africa and Europe. Very few cultures living on the coast do not have mermaid stories. The mermaid myth goes right back to ancient Greece and to the Middle East where archaeologists have found bronze mouldings of mermaids that are 3,000 years old. Mermaid sightings have continued right up to the 20th century, so what are the origins of this myth?" Read More
